What is a gifted student?
A gifted student is one whose intelligence- typically described as an IQ score resulting from one or more test-is 130 or above. The average learner takes 12-18 repetitions to master a concept, while the gifted learner only takes 6-8 repetitions. 

How to spot a gifted student

These are some normal traits and characteristics displayed by gifted students, Recognizing  and understanding these traits is an important step in being an effective teacher to students in this category.

  • Asks many questions and is very curious
  • Possesses a large amount of information
  • Has a good memory
  • Learns new information quickly
  • Retains information easily
  • Masters reading skills earlier
  • Demonstrates strong abilities in math
  • Display unusual academic achievement
  • Finishes classwork quickly
  • Is interested in many things
  • Becomes involved in a variety of activities
  • Is motivated to try new things
  • Enjoys a challenge
  • Thinks independently
  • Expresses unique and individual opinions
  • Is self-motivated
  • Uses higher level thinking skills
  • Makes connections other students do not see
  • Considers unusual approaches to problem-solving
  • Has a strong sense of justice
  • Likes to debate current issues and real life problems
  • Has a sophisticated sense of humor
  • Understands subtle humor
  • Enjoys play on words and satire
  • Demonstrates strong expressive skills
  • Is sensitive to feelings of others
  • Elaborate on ideas

Along with these good qualities are some behaviors and characteristics that may be frustrating

  • Easily gets “off task” and “off topic”
  • Is impatient when not called on in class
  • Is easily bored
  • Can become disruptive in class
  • Shows strong resistance to repetitive activities and memorization
  • Completes work quickly but sloppily
  • May resist working on activities apart from areas of interest
  • Leaves projects unfinished
  • Takes on too much and becomes overwhelmed
  • Challenges authority
  • Does not handle criticism well
  • Does not work well in groups
  • Tends to be absent minded regarding practical details
  • Forgets homework assignments
  • Can be very critical of self and others
  • Likes to argue a point
  • Is a perfectionist and expects others to be perfect as well
  • Easily gets carried away with a joke
  • Has a tendency to be become the class clown
  • Sometimes perceived as a know–it-all by peers
  • Is sometimes bossy to peers in group situations




Three Specific Strategies to Accommodate Gifted Learners

Academic Competition

Involve gifted and high achieving students in academic competitions. These type of events are relatively inexpensive. They are highly motivating and not only  do they challenge students academically, they provide development in leadership skills and working in a group.

Vertical Enrichment

Design assignments or projects that go above and beyond what is covered in the regular classroom. This give gifted students more of a challenge rather than more of the same. There are a number of educational products for gifted and talented students that be adapted easily into regular classroom activities.

Leveling Assignments 

Leveling assignments allows you explore the same materials with all your students , but require a different outcome depending on the students' individual abilities.
